  X-Men #110 (Apr 78): The 'X'-Sanction

Creative Team: Chris Claremont, author; Tony DeZuniga, guest artist; Anette Kawecki, letterer; Andy Yanchus, colorist; Archie Goodwin, editor; Dave Cockrum, special thanks

Starting Line Up: Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Banshee, Storm, Colossus

Guest Star: Pheonix

Synopsis: It's Moira McTaggert's last day in New York, so the X-Men are enjoying a game of baseball. Colossus hits a homerun and knocks Wolverine right off the base. Pheonix tries to make Wolverine feel better, but that just hurts him even more when he sees her holding hands with Cyclops. Moira then realises the man from the phone company will be there any minute, so she runs inside the mansion. Moire answers the door and the man's apparent plastic surgery startles her. She lead him to the main phone junction, but he tranqs her. As he looks around and talks to himself (as all villains should), he reveals his master is looking for information on the X-Men. His master then telepathically contacts him (revealing the snooper's name to be Warhawk) and threatens him to succeed or else. Meanwhile, outside, Wolverine asks Pheonix if she's like to go for a drink with him. Cyclops then informs them the X-Men have to workout in the danger room instead. Pheonix takes the professor up the stairs and while she thinks about how she can't explain to anyone what she's been feeling since becoming Pheonix. Warhawk then ambushes them and tranqs them too. As she goes down, Pheonix contacts Cyclops for help. Before he get the X-Men on the move, they are locked in the Danger Room and it's turned on, with the safety interlocks turned off. Cyclops tries the panic button inside the danger room, but it won't respond. Cyclops orders Nightcrawler to teleport outside the room and shut it off from there, and to bring Wolverine incase there's someone out there. The strain from the teleport knocks them both unconscious. The four X-Men left inside do their best, but are overwhelmed by their own Danger Room. Outside, Wolverine comes to and starts to smash the Danger Room controls. He's then attacked by Warhawk. They fight until Colossus smashes through the Danger Room door. Warhawk, out matched, desides to escape, but can't find his gas bomb. Nightcrawler stole it. Colossus then coldcocks Nighthawk. The police are called and take Nighthawk is taken away. The cheif wants to know how a wanted supervillain was stopped by a school. "Luck" Pheonix is worried why her cosmic powers were unable to help her stop Warhawk. She figures she needs help harnessing her powers. She officially rejoins the X-Men. Xavier warns the X-Men that Warhawk's mind was shielded from his telepathic scans, and he's worried about Warhawk's knowledge of the mansion.

Yeah, but is it good? Not especially. This just felt like a filler issue. Warhawk is a horrible villain, with powers unexplained. He also didn't look like he had bas plastic surgery like Moira built it up. His minor importance does come up in later issues. X-Men playing baseball is fun. I wish there was more to it.

Significata: First appearance of Warhawk. The mansion is infiltrated. Pheonix officially rejoins the team. Wolverine asks her out on a date. Since Xavier is no longer having mental issues, Moira leaves her position as the team's housekeeper and returns to her lab on Muir Island.
