  Uncanny X-Men #157 (May 82): Hide-'n'-Seek!

Creative Team: Chris Claremont, writter; Dave Cockrum & Bob Wiacek, artists; Janice Chiang, letterer; Don Warfield, colorist; Louise Jones, editor; Jim Shooter, editor-in-chief

Starting Line Up: Storm, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Colossus, Sprite

Synopsis: The X-Men and the Starjammers are working hard to repair the Starjammer. Colossus strains himself too hard and it aggrivates his injuries he suffered from Deathbird. He has to undergo surgery again. Lilandra tries to contact the command ship to tell everyone she's alive and well and to call off the attack on Earth. But her chancellor, Araki, has been killed and cannot recieve the message. He was killed by Admiral Lord Samedar. Xavier tries to contact Kitty and Nightcrawler telepathically despite the indredible distance between them. While sending his message, his mind touches some sort of anamoly inside himself (a vague immage of the Brood). He probes it and it causes him to become catatonic. Meanwhile, the Brood are taking out their frustration over losing on Deathbird. She fights back. They call a truce. She then gives the Brood all the information she has on the X-Men and they are so impressed they intend to capture them. Deathbird knows the Brood will turn on her eventually, but she plans to slaughter them before that. Meanwhile, Kitty and Nightcrawler are ready to escape their prison since the ship is moving into battle stations. She has an isolated space suit replicated for her, then phases through the window into space, then re-enters outside the cell. As she goes to free Nightcrawler, an execution squad is coming to kill them. She gets the world to Nightcrawler in time and they take them out. Nightcrawler then gives Kitty a portable version of the costume repicator he's been working on, then they go in search of Araki. They find him dead. They figure their only hope is to get the Imperial Guard on their side. The Admiral gets his crew ready to destroy the Earth. Nightcrawler quickly teleports in and out many times quickly to create a lot of smoke. Then "Phoenix" appears and threatens to destroy the Shi'Ar if they attack the Earth. It's really Kitty using the costume replicator, but the Shi'Ar don't know that and fear Phoenix has come back from the dead. Nightcrawler kidnaps Oracle of the Guard since she's a telepath and will know they are telling the truth. Oracle then convinces half of the Imperial Guard including Gladiator and Starbolt the X-Men are telling the truth, but the other half follows Samedar's orders. So a huge battle breaks out while the ship re-commences it's attack on Earth. Kitty tries to short out the computers, but it's too late. The Shi'Ar ship fires at the Earth, but at the last second the Starjammer intercepts the blast. Lilandra appears before the Shi'Ar to have Samedar arrested. Xavier is still catatonic.

Yeah, but is it good? This is a mixed bag. The good is the whole plan with "Phoenix" was pretty nifty. And it shows the Shi'Ar are still scared to death of a Phoenix despiter being dead. This starts a small story arc with Xavier being in a coma because of something within him. This leads to a big development in the X-Men and changes not only X-Men comics, but Marvel comics in general. I'll explain that when we get there. And there was a nifty, but short Imperial Guard battle royal. The bad is the ending feels super rushed. Like the story was ment to go 3 or 4 more pages but they had to cram it into 1. And the down right silly is a blast so powerful it will destroy the Earth is stopped by the Starjammer getting in it's way. So it can destroy all of the Earth but not one spaceship? The Starjammer isn't even damaged. Colossus having surgery on his injury again seemed pretty useless since he was fine by the end of the comic and the X-Men were late for the already established reason of the Stajammer being repaired. Not much from the regular team as it's mostly a Nightcrawler and, surprise surprise, Kitty issue.

Significata: Xavier is in a coma becase of some anamoly within him. It has something to do with the Brood. Lilandra returns to command the Shi'Ar.
