X-Men #3 (Jan 64): Beware of the Blob!

Creative Team: written by Stan Lee; illustrated by Jack Kirby; inked by Paul Reinman; lettered by Art Simek

Starting Line Up: Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast, Marvel Girl

Synopsis: Xavier detects a new mutants and sends the team to recruit him. The mutant is the Blob, who cannot be physically harmed or moved. They find him at the circus as a sideshow freak. He doesn't join the team and instead sends his whole circus to atatck the X-Men. They get their asses kicked. They win when Xavier wipes everyone's minds.

Yeah, but is it good? I really can't blame the Blob for attacking the X-Men. It's Cyclops who finds him, demands he joins the team, Blob says no, Cyclops blasts him, tags along because he thinks Marvel Girl is cute, Xavier tests him, Iceman attacks him becaue he thinks he's obnoxious, and then they ask him to join the team. And they can't understand why he would delince! Then the team get beaten by a circus. Not a bunch of supervillains, but a circus. Clowns and tumblers and a gorilla and such. And again, all the fighting is for nothing because Xavier simply wipes everyone's minds. Everyone falls in love with Marvel Girl. Cyclops admits he has feelings for her, but can't do anything about it as long as he has his optic blasts. She likes him in return, but won't say anything. Angel still wants to get with her. And even Xavier mentions he loves her (but that would never come up again). But at least the personalities are coming out. Cyke is serious. Beast starts acting brainy. Angel is a conceited playboy.

Significata: First appearance of the Blob. The Cyclops/Marvel Girl love story begins.
