  X-Men #6 (Jul 64): Sub-Mariner! Joins the Evil Mutants

Creative Team: written with the flair of Stan Lee; drawn with the air of Jack Kirby; inked with the care of Chic Stone; lettered on a dare by S. Rosen

Starting Line Up: Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast, Marvel Girl

Guest Star: Sub-Mariner

Synopsis: Both Xavier and Magneto try to recruit Namor the Sub-Mariner into their respective teams, both believing he is a mutant. He accepts Magneto's invitation to meet him at his island (which has a giant horseshoe magnet on it). While there, the X-Men show up. The X-Men fight the Brotherhood. Namor gets sick of all the fighting and returns to his underwater domain.

Yeah, but is it good? Same old, same old. This one's pretty bad beyond the guest appearance of the Sub-Mariner. At the time, they were wrong. He wasn't a mutant, he's a human/Atlantean hybrid. But 30 years later Marvel decided to start calling him a mutant to boost his sales. It didn't work. The justification is he can fly, which neither humans nor Atlanteans can do.

Significata: Sub-Mariner is thought to be a mutant for the first time.
